Harald Kretzschmar: Film Faces (Portrait caricatures)

15 December 2005 – 26 February 2006

Harald Kretzschmar has been working for the film business for more than 50 years – although indirectly. Nothing escaped his sharp pen – neither the smile of a DEFA actor during a shooting break nor the prominent glance of an Italian beauty. Most notably, his caricatures accompanying the adored / despised reviews of Renate Holland-Moritz in the satirical magazine "Eulenspiegel" added another dimension to the written word: facial expressions. Bringing things that would normally require a lot of words to the point with just a few strokes: that′s what Kretzschmar achieves with his portrait caricatures.
The fact that Kretzschmar managed to frequently capture film celebrities during their heydays allowed us to look back on national and international stars, most notably from the last half-century. The foyer exhibition " Harald Kretzschmar: Film Faces. Portrait caricatures" brought the dead and the living, the unforgotten and the hardly remembered favourites of cineasts together: Simone Signoret or Jack Lemmon, Angelica Domröse or Jean-Paul Belmondo, Raimund Schelcher or Ornella Muti – who would or could forget them? Thanks to Kretzschmar′s "Film Faces", it is possible to preserve their expressions on something else than film copies and to remember faces that once didn′t need to be remembered.
