Bambi, Golden Sparrow, and Flying Ox

5 June – 5 December 2010
The goal of every filmmaker is to make a good film that is shown in full movie theatres. The wish that ranks third – if not higher – is to be able to attract the attention of film experts, i.e. to win a festival award.
Of course, Filmmuseum Potsdam’s collections also comprise several of those trophies. Among them are not only awards, but also presents, certificates, and fan gifts that were handed over to filmmakers or actors at film events or premieres. The visual properties of these objects – same as their often somewhat bizarre designs – are startling.
Among the most amazing examples is the “Golden Apsara”, which was awarded to the makers of the DEFA film “Die gefrorenen Blitze” at the Phnom-Penh First International Film Festival in 1968. Likewise, the “Große Steiger” – an award of the GDR National Film Festival – or a golden spaceship from the Trieste Utopian Film Festival are real eye-catchers. Visitors could also contemplate one of Germany’s favourite awards: the “Bambi”. The one presented in the exhibition was awarded to Daniel Brühl for his performance in “Good bye Lenin”.
