On 26 April 2006, the popular Ufa actress would have turned 100 years old. With just a few films, the short-lived artist conquered the audience. “A new type of character was born in German film: after the ‘vamp’ and the ‘cute girlie’, there appeared a girl with heart who wasn’t a sweetheart, who was smart but not a bluestocking, charming yet not coy – a down-to-earth and bracingly natural girl.” (Gabriele Müller, Renate Müller’s sister)
An unfortunate relationship and her sudden death led to speculations in the press and, in 1960, to Artur Brauner’s production of Liebling der Götter (“Darling of the Gods”), with Ruth Leuwerik playing Renate Müller. This film and Viktor und Viktoria were featured in our cinema programme.
A foyer exhibition displayed film stills, portraits and private photos as well as personal documents that the museum was recently able to acquire.
Filmmuseum Potsdam wishes to thank Ms. Dr. Ursula Krüger, who kindly entrusted us with materials on Renate Müller from her property.
