Biography
- 17 April 1931
- Born in Dölau
- 1949
- Stage debut at the theatre in Cottbus. Three years later, he is engaged at the Theater der Freundschaft and the Maxim-Gorki-Theater in Berlin.
- 1954
- Feature film debut in Leuchtfeuer, a coproduction of the GDR and Sweden
- 1959 - 1970
- Thate is engaged at the Berliner Ensemble. Here, he plays (among others) Givola in "Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui", Aufidius in "Coriolan" and Galy Gay in "Mann ist Mann". The latter performance is rewarded with the "Actor of the Year" award.
- 1960
- Thate gets his first role in a DEFA production directed by Konrad Wolf: Leute mit Flügeln. Wolf subsequently casts him for another two films: Professor Mamlock (1961) and Der geteilte Himmel (1964).
- 1972 - 1980
- He is engaged at the Deutsches Theater. Again, he is voted "Actor of the Year" for his performance in the role of "Richard III".
- 1976
- Playing Manfred Krug’s antagonist in the 5-part TV film Daniel Druskat, Thate is introduced to an audience of millions.
- 1980
- For the last time, Thate can be seen on GDR cinema screens in the DEFA film Don Juan, Karl-Liebknecht-Str. 78.
- 1980
- Together with his wife Angelica Domröse, he leaves for West Berlin. Here, he plays (among others) a leading role in the controversial Peter Zadek staging of "Jeder stirbt für sich allein" at the Schiller-Theater.
- 1981
- Both Thate and Domröse play a role in the Frank Beyer film Die zweite Haut.
- 1982
- Thate works with Rainer Werner Fassbinder for Die Sehnsucht der Veronika Voss. Afterwards, he does independent work for film and TV productions as well as guest performances at renowned theatres in (among others) Salzburg, Munich, Bochum, Basel, Vienna and Berlin.
- 1998
- Thate gets his most important role after the German reunification in Peter Wedel’s 6-part TV series Der König von St. Pauli.
- 1999
- In Andreas Kleinert’s Wege in die Nacht, Thate plays the former head of a large GDR company who fails to cope with life after the reunification and finally breaks down.
- 2003
- Thate performs in Der neunte Tag, directed by Volker Schlöndorff.
- 2004
- He plays the main role of composer Ernest Broch in Jutta Brückner’s Hitlerkantate.
- Hilmar Thate lives in Berlin.
